Cormorant

The colony of cormorants in the fjord of Última Esperanza is one of the main attractions during our navigation to the Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers.

Cormorants are aquatic birds belonging to the family Phalacrocoracidae. At least 4 species inhabit the Chilean Patagonia, with the Imperial Cormorant being predominant. This species is often mistaken for a penguin, but they do not even belong to the same family.

Cormorants are excellent fishermen, nesting in rocky flat areas that are difficult to access along coasts, islands, and islets. The nesting months are between October and December.
